In 2023, the electric vehicle (EV) market in Australia has seen significant growth, with Tesla, BYD, MG, and Volvo emerging as the top brands in terms of sales. Tesla leads the market, particularly with its Model 3, which was the best-selling electric car in the country in the first half of the year, achieving 14,540 sales. This dominance is further underscored by the performance of Tesla’s Model Y. BYD, another strong performer, has been presenting a serious challenge to Tesla, particularly with its Atto 3 model. MG and Volvo are also notable players in the Australian EV market, with models like the MG ZS EV and Volvo XC40 being among the top seven EVs sold in Australia.

A significant proportion of these top-selling EVs, including the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and Volvo XC40, are sourced from China, representing 86.9% of all EV sales in Australia. This high percentage indicates a strong market preference for Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Furthermore, other brands such as Kia, with its EV6, and Mercedes-Benz, with multiple models including the EQA, have also been contributing to the expanding EV market in Australia. Mercedes-Benz, in particular, has a diverse range of nine EVs including sedans, SUVs, and vans.

This growth in the EV market is part of a broader surge in demand for electric vehicles in Australia, where the share of EVs in the new car market reached a record of 8% in April 2023.
